Ingredients:

Cake
1/2 c - butter
1 1/2 c - sugar
2 eggs
1 c - buttermilk
1 tsp -vanilla
2 1/4 c - flour
1/8 tsp - salt
3 Tbsp - cocoa
1 oz - red food coloring
1 Tbsp - vinegar
1 tsp - baking soda

Icing
1 c - sugar
1/2 c - butter
1 c - milk
1/2 c - shortening
5 Tbsp - flour
dash - salt
1 tsp - vanilla
Directions: one line for each direction. When saved the lines will be numbered.
  1. Cake: Cream butter, sugar & eggs until fluffy.

  2. Add alternately vanilla, buttermilk, flour and salt.

  3. Make a paste of cocoa and red food coloring. Mix in a little of the first batter a little at a time until it's a creamy texture that won't clump in your batter. Then add to the remainder of your first mixture.

  4. Blend vinegar with soda in a bowl (use either a 1 c measuring cup or a cereal bowl since this foams up pretty high) and fold lightly into batter.

  5. Bake at 350 degrees for about 35 min. Make sure cake is completely cooled before icing it.

  6. Icing: Mix sugar, salt, butter and shortening, let stand.

  7. In a small saucepan, slowly mix milk into the flour and mix until smooth.

  8. Bring to a boil and boil until mixture starts to thicken (it will be slightly gummy). Let stand until cooled.

  9. Add to butter mixture and beat until fluffy. Add vanilla and beat thoroughly. (Icing should be light and fluffy when done.)
